During Takeoff
When the airplane and the sled are moving at takeoff speed, the airplane unlatches from the sled and goes airborne due to aerodynamic lift. At this juncture, the idle engines kick it and the plane continues normal flight.

After Takeoff
After the plane unlatches from the sled, the sled's regenerative brakes take over stopping the sled and generating electric charge. Some of this charge is used to return the sled to the starting point. The remaining charge is stored in a supercapacitor for future use.
